Being eco-friendly when building your home should be high on your priority list, as should practicality and aesthetics. The bathroom, perhaps one of the most used rooms in your home, requires a lot of planning and choice of materials. Nowadays, there are a plethora of options for bathroom flooring, even eco-friendly. Don’t worry, it doesn’t mean expensive in this case. There are plenty of options for those who want to be eco-friendly while on a budget. Being eco-friendly doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style too. Some nice, chic, and eco-friendly options are also durable and practical.
When it comes to eco-friendly flooring, cork is usually the first to be mentioned. This is probably because it is a rapidly renewable resource. It is resistant to moisture and mold/mildew growth. If you are looking for the obvious choice of bathroom tile, cork may be a better option over many hardwoods and rugs. The cork is turned into tiles which are installed by clicking them together. The main disadvantage of cork is that you have to be careful not to leave the puddles standing as they can distort the shape. If water seeps under the tile, the adhesive may come off. If you live in a place with high humidity, cork might not be suitable for you as the humidity will cause the tiles to contract and expand.
Another “green” flooring that you can consider is bamboo, as it is a fast-growing and highly renewable resource. It’s affordable, durable, and looks great in modern and traditional spaces. If you like the look of wood for your bathroom floor, but want to go the ‘green’ route, bamboo is a great alternative as it can be harvested in about 3 years, unlike hardwoods which take between 50 and 100 years to reach maturity. . Due to the light color, bamboo can be used in small bathrooms to brighten up space and make it look bigger.
You can opt for engineered or solid bamboo. Engineering, however, is the more sustainable option. To prevent water damage, you can use a good top coat that will prevent water from seeping in.
You can also use mats where they are most prone to moisture so that water does not collect on them.
Solid bamboo is a natural blonde color but you can dye it with any color you like. A big advantage of solid bamboo is that it can be refinished with light sanding and a new topcoat when it shows signs of wear. Artificial bamboo cannot be sanded.
Bamboo and cork can be used in the bathroom, but it will be better if you choose it for a bathroom that is not used very often, such as the guest bathroom, as they are not the more water-resistant.
Recycled glass tile floors are extremely attractive and come in a variety of colors, patterns, and finishes. They are not absorbent, will not stain, and are not damaged by excessive moisture like most natural materials; they are easy to clean and maintain.
Glass tile also has a unique quality of reflecting light instead of absorbing it, making it ideal for illuminating dark bathrooms. However, they are expensive, difficult to install, and very susceptible to scratches.
Because glass disintegrates naturally, it is considered an extremely “green” option. They are a nice option that can be used both as a backsplash and as flooring. Get lights that complement the tiles for the best effect. However, they should not be used in the shower or in other wet areas as they can be slippery. If you do decide to choose it for your floor, make sure you get a top coat that will seal the tiles and provide some grip.
Concrete may look odd on a list of green materials, but it has earned its reputation as a green material. A layer of concrete exists under most bathrooms. Discover this layer and use it as a floor covering if it is more ecological. It looks like a stone in its appearance and when properly sealed it can look classy. Although it is cold, hard, and slightly rough, it is extremely durable, inexpensive, and low-maintenance.
